Is she a mermaid or a myth?
Parthenope is a woman named after her city. In Greek myth, Parthenope is the mermaid who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus. Her body was washed up on the spot where Castel dell'Ovo is now built, and for this she gave the name to the city that would later become Neapolis, Naples.
In the film, Parthenope is the embodiment of the city of Naples

Somewhat disappointed with his last film È STATA LA MANO DI DIO, with PARTHENOPE I was reminded of what had touched me so much with Sorrentino’s films. Everything is beautiful, from the city of Naples and its clean water to the still unknown goddess Celeste da Porta.
The beauty of life in its insignificance
Add to this the Fellini-esque shots and the wonderful jazz soundtrack by Lele Marchitelli: you get perfection. One might think he’s making another GRANDE BELLEZZA, but that’s just not the case. Sorrentino manages to surprise us once again, with a new way of dealing with what is – ultimately – the same subject.
Oh, and I almost forgot, the film stars Gary Oldman
The film asks questions without ever answering them, as if saying that you should stop looking for answers and start noticing the beauty of the world for what it is. As a result, the viewer leaves the theater not with answers, but with an interesting approach to life and, ultimately, death… Although his screen time is limited, he manages to give a wonderful performance.
I honestly hope/believe it will win the Palme d’Or
Then he withdraws, as if urging us to enjoy the film, he convinced us (by his presence in the cast) to go and watch it. So I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste – some scenes are quite strange, I must admit – but as far as I’m concerned, this film gave me everything I did (and didn’t expect) when I entered the theater.
